Mapping climate change impacts in Korean national parks using SPOT-VGT NDVI time series

Global temperature rises caused by a climate change have a direct impact on vegetation changes and phenological patterns. In this study, we used the satellite-based normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series to map climate change impacts in protected areas. Sixteen Korean national parks were selected as study areas, and the SPOT-VGT NDVI S10 data for the years 2003–2012 360 images were synthesized using a 10-day monthly unit for the analysis. In the study area, the terrain characteristics were analyzed by national park unit (n=16) using ASTER GDEM data, and the greenness rate of change (GRC), which originally analyze multi-annual changes by yearly mean NDVI unit, were modified for the purposes of the analysis using 10-years’ monthly NDVI units considering Korean seasonal pattern characteristics. Thus, a decennial monthly mean NDVI, a decennial monthly modified GRC, and coefficient of variant (CV) were calculated by national park unit. This analysis result showed the spatial distributions of vegetation changes and phonological patterns by climate change effects for each national park analysed. This methodology is expected to help protected area management agencies in mapping satellite-based climate change impacts.
